Travel to Tajikistan is an ascent to the Pamirs' Roof of the World, one of the world's tallest and most impressive mountain ranges. However, the roots of this ancient land are as deep and old as time itself. Temple remains, remote villages' enigmatic languages, and the rich cultural legacies that have been preserved by the resilient people who take pride in their homes all contain hints of antiquity.
Many tourists are unaware that Tajikistan's delights are not just reserved for tenacious travelers alone, despite the country having all but thrown its doors wide open to the outside world in recent years. The best features of the region will appeal to amateur anthropologists, history aficionados, environment lovers, and interested travelers alike.
Tajikistan is the ideal vacation spot for everyone looking for a distinctive, exciting, and memorable trip. Backpackers, hikers, cyclists, and nature lovers will all be lured to this lonely, well-preserved area, which is home to the magnificent Pamir Highway and some of the world's most beautiful mountains. A trip to this lesser-known country blends the past and present, giving many people the sensation that they have not only traversed the world but also gone back in time. Spending time in Tajikistan, a tapestry of color and tradition, will broaden your horizons and improve your perspective on the world.
The majority of visitors enter Tajikistan through its capital, Dushanbe, one of Central Asia's loveliest cities with its gilded palaces, lush parks, and neoclassical façade. With the exception of a few museums and markets, Dushanbe's attractions are limited as it emerges from the shadows of Soviet domination. It boasts the world's largest teahouse and tallest flagpole.
But in Tajikistan, the journey—a voyage through history and geography—is more important than the final goal. A warm welcome greets those who are daring enough to travel here.
In Tajikistan, getting around inside the boundaries of the larger cities is often simply because there is typically a public transportation system. In most areas of Dushanbe, buses and white vans (marshrutkas) bearing line numbers run. It can be challenging to understand the various lines, but public transportation is undoubtedly the least expensive and slowest way to get about town.
Even more convenient and reasonably priced is taking a taxi to get around the city! Most taxi drivers have a starting fee of 10 Somoni and utilize their mobile phone as the meter. A five to ten-minute cab ride often costs no more than two dollars. Therefore, taking a bus is generally less expensive than taking a taxi for short distances.
When you get into a shared automobile, you almost certainly get a clunker. Although there are some modern, high-end vehicles on the road, most of them are used vehicles from Europe. German country badges (D) or dashboard panels in the Dutch language make this fairly clear.
The most typical car you will see on the road is probably a revived Opel from Germany. Of course, tougher terrain and dirt roads are not suitable for regular passenger cars. The first choice for the rough roads in the Tajik mountains, you most often end up in a Land Cruiser whenever something stronger is required.
In Tajikistan, there are hardly any automobile rental firms, and the ones that do exist are pricey even by Western standards. Renting a car with a driver is the easiest way to have your own mode of transportation as opposed to using a shared vehicle. Typically, a predetermined price and a fee per kilometer are charged.
Of course, you can also take the road trip of a lifetime and travel to Tajikistan in your own vehicle, leaving all of the aforementioned concerns behind. Although it seems absurd, you may come across travelers who genuinely do this.
Another option for personal transportation is a bicycle. Of course, you can only do it if you're healthy and willing to endure pain, and suffer greatly. The roads in Tajikistan's rugged countryside are continuously going uphill and downhill. Nevertheless, a sizable number of stubborn individuals ride bicycles through the entire Pamir Mountains each year.
Tajikistan uses the somoni as its currency. It bears Ismail Samani's name, the founding father of the Tajik nation.
1 USD = 10.92 TJS
The Tajik language is spoken in Tajikistan. There, it is the first language of about 65% of the people. Tajik, also known as Tajiki, is a language that descended from Persian and is primarily spoken in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
ATMs in TajikistanIn Dushanbe, Penjikent, Khujand, Khorog, Isfara, Istaravshan, Qurghon-Teppa, and even in more remote locations, ATMs are available. But not in Murghab!
Eskhata Bank (сата) is the most dependable bank in Dushanbe, offering USD and a high Somoni withdrawal limit (beware weekends and especially Sundays as ATMs are frequently empty; they appear to only be refilled Monday through Friday).
There are five or six ATMs on the corner of Bukhoro and Rudaki Street, and the Serena Hotel has one that has consistently worked well with US dollars. Compared to the ATM at the Hilton (former Sheraton), it is significantly more convenient.
Currency Exchange in TajikistanIn Tajikistan, both the US dollar and the euro are commonly recognized. People may be more ready to accept the dollar than the euro in remote or smaller locations without a centralized exchange.
Even if there is still a black market for dollars, it is not all that different from the banks' exchange rates. Watch out because it's also forbidden. They are delighted to meet you, so there will never be a difficulty exchanging dollars for somoni. The reverse is significantly more challenging because banks sometimes do not have funds on hand.
If you have any extra somoni, you can exchange it for Uzbek or Kyrgyz som on either side of the busier land crossings (at Osh if you are coming from the Pamirs), but if you are flying out, do not wait till the airport. Uluqqat (China) is where you can swap somoni, although we are unsure of any somoni exchange locations in Afghanistan.
Tajikistan Time (TJT; UTC+05:00) is used to indicate time in this country. At the moment, Tajikistan does not observe Daylight Saving Time. Asia/Dushanbe is the IANA designation for Tajikistan Time. Time zones are shown on a map of South Asia; Tajikistan is shown in green to indicate UTC+05:00.
The climate of Tajikistan is characterized by aridity, severe temperatures, and significant intra-annual and regional fluctuation. Tajikistan's location at the confluence of air circulations from Siberia to the north and the tropics to the southeast causes variation.
Tajikistan's international dialing format ranges from 7 to 12 digits: +992 ABCD XXXXX (for area codes beginning with ABCD) and +992 ABCDE XXXX (for area codes beginning with ABCDE).
In Tajikistan, the local equivalents of the 911 emergency number are 01 for fire, 02 for police, and 03 for ambulance service. In Dushanbe, callers can reach the State Traffic Inspectorate (GAI) police by dialing 235-4545 in the event of a traffic accident.
In Tajikistan, several different rules govern the usage and operation of cars. These range from the more common regulations, like following speed limits, to the odd ones, such as keeping the car clean when driving through cities.
220V50Hz and a 220V supply voltage are used in Tajikistan.
These are some of the airlines flying to Tajikistan from around the world. Major airlines offer direct flights to Tajikistan from all over the world. There are also several connecting flights to Tajikistan depending on what countries you depart to and which airline you are flying with. In some airlines, you may consider having layovers too.
13 hours, 29 minutes is the entire flight time between New York, NY, to Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
This implies that a commercial airliner flies at an average speed of 500 mph, or 805 km/h or 434 knots. A further 30 minutes are added for takeoff and landing. The precise time may change based on the wind.
